about

Inspired by the novel of the same name by Barney Norris, this piece features Mike Hall on soprano sax, bass clarinet and wind synth. I play Roland GR55 guitar synth and "modelled" versions of 12 string Rickenbacker and Fender baritone guitars; around half the parts were written then the rest improvised by Mike and I. The photos and film were taken around Salisbury. Barney's novel introduces the people of this area, who built first Woodhenge, then Stonehenge, then Old Sarum, then drained the marshes and built an amazing cathedral. The action takes place in the 21st century though, following 5 very different people whose lives intersect in surprising ways. It explores the dark side of the City as well as its beauty. My music is in no way a paraphrase of the novel but it mixes cloudy impressionism with five lines of counterpoint. Shortly after the novel was published the tragic Salisbury poisonings rocked the area. It was also the first place I saw soldiers with terrible injuries from the Afghanistan conflict - Salisbury is a place where the past is not quite history, maybe it's not even past.
